The Pre-Student Osteopathic Medical Association is the undergraduate division of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA). Pre-SOMA provides pre-medical students the opportunity to connect and become apart of the osteopathic medical community prior to matriculating into medical school. At the undergraduate level, students learn, explore, and spread awareness of osteopathic medicine to their fellow peers and the campus community.

What is Osteopathic Medicine?

Osteopathic medicine is a distinct form of medicine that focuses on whole body care and the relation of body systems in maintaining health and immunity. Osteopathic physicians account for environment and lifestyle factors in the etiology of symptoms, and seek to heal their patients rather than just treat them. While practicing evidence based medicine using the latest science and technology, they offer complementary options to pharmaceuticals and surgery. Doctors of Osteopathy, or DOs, are fully licensed physicians that practice in a variety of specialties and care environments. Their training includes medical school and residency, with an additional 600 hours of training in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. For more information on OMM see the video below. Finally, DOs have a history of compassionate care in areas that lack physicians and resources. They're legacy of service reverberates through the community today with physicians that give back to the community and to those who follow in their footsteps.
